Austin was used to the
sidelines and having to play referee while the other kids
competed in sports in gym class. He used to have three
hour nose bleeds as often as six days a week. The
obstacles that come with having von Willebrand disease, a
disease that both Austin and his mother have, make having a
schedule and participating in typical activities difficult.
Great Lakes Hemophilia Foundation was there
to help Austin gain independence by offering him a
campership to attend a bleeding disorders camp. GLHF
also selected the Felber family to participate in
Fit For All, a pilot fitness program that gives families
affected by bleeding disorders access to the YMCA and a
wellness trainer. The Felbers were thankful for the
opportunity to improve their health and since starting the
program Austin has had fewer bleeds.
